a. Mission. The mission of the convalescent center is to provide facilities for the
convalescent care and physical reconditioning of patients.
b. Assignment and Basis of Allocation. The convalescent center is assigned
to the theater Army MEDCOM based on one per 10,000 COMMZ beds required. It is
normally further attached to a hospital center. It provides convalescent care for 300
patients and physical reconditioning for 1,200 patients.
c. Organization. See Figure 6-7. The convalescent center is organized into a
center headquarters, an administrative service, a clinical service, and a reconditioning
battalion composed of six companies.

d. Concept of Operations. The convalescent center will normally be established
in the COMMZ, where required, in order to prevent unnecessary evacuation beyond the
COMMZ of patients who required only convalescent care and physical reconditioning to
enable them to return to duty. The reconditioning companies conduct physical
reconditioning, orientation, and educational activities as required. It is the responsibility
of the company commander to insure that each man departing the company for duty has
