c. Organization of Surgeon's Office. The size and composition of the theater
Army surgeon's office varies with the strength of the Army forces in the theater, the
nature of the military operations to be conducted, and the specific responsibilities
assigned. The office may be divided into the following divisions: administrative,
historical, plans, medical records and statistics, nursing, operations, personnel,
professional services, preventive medicine, supply, dental, veterinary, fiscal, and
THE MEDICAL COMMAND
The MEDCOM is established to provide centralized command and control of all
health service functions and operations within the COMMZ. The mission of the
MEDCOM is to provide health service support to the combat zone and to Army units and
units of other services, as designated, located within the COMMZ. This includes long-
term hospitalization; patient regulating and evacuation within and out of the theater;
complete definitive medical treatment and dental, medical laboratory, medical supply and
maintenance, preventive medicine, and veterinary services.
ORGANIZATION of THE MEDICAL COMMAND
a. The MEDCOM is a major command of theater Army. It consists of a
Headquarters and Headquarters Company; a general staff; a number of hospital centers,
medical groups and medical battalions with delegated command and control missions;
and the health service support operating units of the COMMZ. The MEDCOM may be
tailored to adjust to the theater Army mission and retain flexibility to permit rapid
response to changing medical requirements. Figure 6-1 illustrates a typical MEDSOM
organization and the type units normally assigned.
b. The organization of the MEDCOM headquarters is shown in Figure 6-2. Staff
services provided by MEDCOM include:
(1) Informing the theater Army commander and his staff on the health of the
command and on the medical aspects of matters affecting CSS.
Coordinating health service support operations within the COMMZ.
(3) Providing advice to the commanders of other major COMMZ commands
on health service support matters.
