e. A good preventive dentistry program reduces the number of dental
emergencies and thus conserves the fighting strength. It also reduces time involved in
dental treatment and reduces the use of transportation, travel time, use of fuel, and use
of drivers.
f. The preventive dentistry program includes orientation and motivation of Army
personnel to observe good oral health practices. In its clinical aspects, it includes
measures based on a thorough dental examination followed by a detailed individual
treatment plan for those patients with complex problems.
g. The members of the Dental Care System provide effective dental service for
the Army by the application of the principles of preventive dentistry through a dental
organization established to best preserve the oral health of individual soldiers and to
meet the needs of the Army.
Section III. THE VETERINARY CORPS
a. Mission. The VC supports the AMEDD mission by performing inspections of
subsistence to determine fitness for human consumption, performing sanitation
inspections, providing a comprehensive disease control program concerning diseases
transmitted by animals to man, and providing veterinary animal medicine to
Government-owned animals and to other animals as authorized.
b. Composition. The Army VC consists of commissioned officers that are
qualified doctors of veterinary medicine. They serve in the US and in the countries
where US Army troops are stationed. The VC insignia is the gold caduceus with a black
"V" superimposed thereon. The AOC identifiers applicable to the VC are:

3-21. UTILIZATION OF VETERINARY CORPS OFFICERS
A VC Officer's duty time will be devoted (to the maximum possible extent) to
actions and procedures for which he has been "specially trained with a minimum of time
given to those duties which can be adequately performed under his direction by other
AMEDD personnel. Except when regulations specifically stipulate to the contrary, the
VC officer should not be detailed as members of courts-martial or nonprofessional
boards and committees or be assigned to other duties in which veterinary training is not
essential. Similarly, every effort will be made consistent with due process of law to
