c. Sanitary Engineering. Officers of this section specialize in the career fields
of sanitary engineering, environmental science, entomology, and nuclear medical
science. The technical skills of these officers are utilized worldwide in a variety of
assignments, including HSC, AHS, USAEHA, and TOE 8-620 PVNTMED teams, which
contribute to the Army Health and Environment Program. This section comprises about
8 percent of the MS officer strength. The following AOCs are included in this section:

d. Optometry. Optometry officers begin their military career as a captain, after
completing a four year doctorate level program in which they receive the degree, Doctor
of Optometry, 0.D. Assignments are diversified: Chief of the Optometry Section, in the
combat division; Staff or Chief Optometrist, in the MEDDAC or MEDCEN; Chief, Optical
Laboratory; R&D; Occupational Vision; Teaching; Consultant; Commander/Dean, USA
Medical Equipment and Optical School; and Assistant Chief, MS. Optometrists are
primary health care professionals, who are responsible for the prevention, diagnosis,
treatment and management, and/or referral of ocular disorders, that is, injuries,
diseases and visual dysfunctions, of the visual system. Additionally, they are
responsible for the recognition, treatment, and/or referral of ocular manifestations of
systemic diseases. This involves the use of diagnostic and therapeutic medications and
special ophthalmic instruments. These professionals are concerned with the
enhancement of vision and visual functions with emphasis on the importance that role
vision has in the total health care and in the quality of life. The AOC of the optometry
officer is 68K.
3-30. UTILIZATION OF MEDICAL SERVICE CORPS OFFICERS
a. Except for courts, boards, administrative officer-of-the-day (AOD) or duty
officer, the MS officer's duty time will be devoted to actions and procedures for which
they have been specially trained if they are included in one of the following categories:
