b. Parts of an Instrument. Instruments used in scaling have three common
parts (see figure 3-2). The handle is used for holding the instrument. The shank
connects the handle to the working end. The working end does the actual work of the
instrument. The working end is divided into the face, lateral sides, back, and tip.
