GENERAL
The eye is a vital sensory organ. Proper care must be initiated immediately, not
only to relieve pain, but also to help prevent permanent eye injury and loss of vision. This
lesson includes principles of application of a dressing to an eye injury.

REASONS FOR USING AN EYE DRESSING
a. Protect the eye from light, infection, and further injury.
b. Limit movement and prevent usage of the eye.
c. Absorb secretions and blood.

PRINCIPLES OF APPLYING A DRESSING
a. Reassure the patient. From your own experience and personal insight, you
know that eye injuries are very frightening. Explain to the patient what you are going to
do.
