4 x 4 inch gauze pads for dressing.

Nonallergenic adhesive tape for dressing.

(11) Scalpel with a #11 pointed I & D blade.
(12) Hemostat (curved or straight).
(13) Plain forceps.
(14) Surgical scissors.
(15) Cotton-tipped sterile applicators.
(16) Culture swabs.
(17) If desired, ethyl chloride spray for small abscess stab wound I & D may
be used. This is contraindicated if a cauterizer is used since ethyl chloride is
flammable.
c. Preparation of Area of Abscess and Surrounding Skin. Proceed in this
manner:

Shave the area.
(2)
Wash the area.
(3)
Prepare the area with povidone-iodine or isopropyl alcohol.
(4)
Drape the area.
