2-24. CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
There are many clinical applications of decubitus positions, although not called
by that name. PA right lateral decubitus is a great aid in demonstrations of stones and
moving the gall bladder away from the spine in cholecystography. Right and left lateral
decubitus positions are used in air contrast barium enemas. In addition, they can
demonstrate free air and fluid in chest and abdominal x-rays to rule out damage to
thoracic and abdominal structures following trauma, especially, when the patient is
unable to stand or sit up.
