k. For special category patients, the empty block on the lower right side of the front
cover should be taped. The color of tape used is determined locally. A special category
record is individually identified and specially handled to reduce the risk of harming or
embarrassing the patient and to ensure its medicolegal integrity. The procedures for
handling a special category record are covered in Lesson 2. (See figure 1-12). HRECs
also require the service member's blood type. Blood type is entered on the record jacket
as shown in figure 1-12.

l. On HRECs, indicate service member's unit in the upper left corner of front cover
under the individual's name. Since active duty members change units, the unit is to be
entered in pencil. (See figure 1-13.)
