(2) Summary Account. The second character of the code represents the
summary account, such as Medical Care (A), Surgical Care (B), and so on. The summary
accounts are usually displayed as AA (medical), AB (surgical), etc. Table 1-4 provides
illustrations of how the first two characters of each MEPRS Clinic Service codes are
derived.

(3) Subaccount. The third character represents a subaccount (workcenter),
such as Internal Medicine and Cardiology, within Medical Care. Thus, AAA would identify
an Internal Medicine Inpatient Care functional workcenter. BAA would identify an Internal
Medicine Ambulatory Care functional workcenter. Table 1-5 provides illustrations of how
the first three characters of each MEPRS Clinic Service codes are derived.
(4) Fourth level codes. Fourth-level codes are provided for use in
situations determined by the military departments. The fourth level codes are used to
enhance the utility and flexibility of the account structure output. Several DoD(HA)
exceptions to the policy enhance the descriptiveness of the episode of care in a managed
care environment. Specifically, 5 placed in the fourth character position signifies an APV
or same day surgery (SDS), and 6, 8, and 9 signifies a resource support or resource
sharing episode. See the MTF MEPRS staff for fourth-level code assignments.
