6-11. MEDICAL SUPPLY AND MAINTENANCE
The MEDCOM commander is responsible for providing medical supply, optical,
and maintenance support in the COMMZ. This includes providing backup support to the
corps in the combat zone. Medical supply, optical, and maintenance units (COMMZ),
(para 6-23), a theater medical inventory control center (ICC), and the supply elements of
field, station, and general hospitals are the major medical supply and materiel activities
under the command and control of the MEDCOM.
a. The Inventory Control Center of the MEDCOM serves as the theater medical
inventory manager. The primary mission of the theater medical ICC is to ensure that
adequate levels of medical supplies are maintained in the theater to support operations.
The major functions of the theater medical ICC are:

Planning, programming, and budgeting for medical supplies and materiel

Determining requirements.
(3)
Performing stock accounting.
(4)
Performing procurement direction.
(5)
Distributing and redistribution management.
(6)
Disposing direction.
(7)
Requisitioning of requirements.
(8)
Computing of theater stockage objective.
(9)
Formulating of medical materiel policies.
(10) Managing assemblage.
(11) Assisting customers..
(12) Monitoring performance of wholesale medical materiel activities.
(13) Determining of medical materiel systems requirements.
b. The MEDSOM units operating in the combat zone and the COMMZ, as well as
COMMZ hospitals, operate as receipt, storage, and issue sites. Supply levels are
established by the theater medical ICC for shipment directly to COMMZ hospitals and
MEDSOM units in the TO.
