THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
The human skeletal system (see figure 1-1) consists of about 206 bones. The
skeleton gives shape and support to the human body. Together with the skeletal
muscles, it performs movement of the body. The skeleton, especially the skull and rib
cage, provides protection to vital internal organs such as the brain, lungs, and heart.
The red marrow in the center of bones produces red blood cells that carry oxygen and
nutrients to all parts of the body.
