3-7. EXAMPLES OF CENTRALLY ACTING SKELETAL MUSCLE RELAXANTS
a. Diazepam (Valium). Diazepam is an antianxiety agent that is also used as
a skeletal muscle relaxant in a dosage of from 2 to 10 milligrams three or four times
daily. The main side effect of diazepam is central nervous system depression. The
patient taking diazepam should be warned that the drug might cause drowsiness.
Furthermore, the patient should be warned not to drink alcoholic beverages while taking
diazepam. Diazepam is a controlled substance (Note Q).
