pesticides, including analyses of environmental and biological specimens, and of
pesticides. Maintains laboratory colonies of insects for test purposes. Evaluates and
develops insect and rodent control and survey materials, equipment, and procedures to
determine biological effectiveness, ecological impact on the environment, and
conformation to military requirements. Evaluates pesticides in regard to their potency,
adulteration, specifications, and short-and long-term effects on man and the
environment, including the pesticides' persistence, degradation, and potential for
movement and accumulation in the environment.
b. Health Physics Division. Conducts ionizing radiation protection surveys and
special studies for the evaluation of health hazards associated with the use or presence
of ionizing radiation sources throughout the Army and other agencies as directed.
Provides technical representatives to accompany the MEDCOM-IG to Army medical
facilities, and the DA-IG to nuclear reactor facilities. Reviews NRC Licenses and DA
Radioactive Material Authorization applications from Army elements for conformance
with pertinent radiation protection guides and standards. Evaluates radiological
protection characteristics of equipment which produces ionizing radiation. Provides
including new instrumentation. Reviews and prepares directives and technical
publications pertaining to the broad field of health physics. Evaluates performance of
Army personnel for competency in performing diagnostic x-ray protection surveys.
c. Laser Microwave Division. Provides assistance to Army installations, and
other governmental agencies upon request, in the prevention and/or reduction of
hazards to personnel from nonionizing electromagnetic radiation sources (radar,
communications systems, microwave ovens, laser, searchlights, other coherent and
noncoherent intense light sources (including infrared, visible, and ultraviolet), and
microwave and magnetic fields generating equipment). Develops and maintains a
comprehensive microwave and laser health program to evaluate all such systems
throughout the Army. Provides testing, maintenance, and/or calibration of microwave
and optical radiation survey instruments used by the division and regional divisions; and
provide consultation services and performs special studies of new laser and microwave
devices.

formulations, and any items of military supply used or proposed for use by the Army, to
provide guidance for recommendations concerning the intended use of such materials
in the environment of military personnel and civilian employees of the Department of the
Army. When authorized by The Surgeon General, provides toxicological services as
may be indicated in regard to items manufactured by Army contractors, to predict the
hazard accompanying their use, and suggest means of safety using potentially
hazardous substances. Provides consultation services and personnel for conducting
