Acquires and maintains a repository of information on developments, practices,
standards, and criteria in pertinent areas. Conducts training at the Academy of Health
Sciences and the Quartermaster School. Conducts microbiological studies as
necessary in accomplishing the mission of the services.
c. Occupational Medicine Division. Makes studies and investigations and
provides advisory services in all areas of preventive medicine and occupational health.
Makes epidemiologic investigations of occupational diseases. Provides consultation in
all phases of occupational health programs through field surveys of Army and Defense
Supply Agency installations, and participates in special environmental medicine studies
in the field when required. Reviews and prepares directives, technical bulletins, health
educational publications, and general informative material. Provides medical
consultation to personnel from other divisions of the Agency. Assists in the health
hazard evaluations of materials used or proposed for use in the Army, which may
adversely affect the health of military or civilian personnel. Reviews proposed
specifications and purchase descriptions from the standpoint of adverse effects on the
health of Army personnel when the item or material involved is used for its intended
purpose. Assists in initiation of occupational vision programs at Army and Defense
Supply agency installations, and provides continuing advice on matters pertaining to the
operation of these programs. Collaborates with the Army Safety Program in promoting
the proper use of safety eyewear. Conducts ophthalmic surveillance programs for
selected group of DA employees whose work may result in exposure to microwave and
Director, Occupational Health, in the training of residents in occupational medicine and
general preventive medicine (environmental health). Provides training in the areas of
occupational and environmental medicine for candidates selected for The Surgeon
General's Clinical Clerkship Program.
d. Hospital Infection Control Program. Provides guidance and technical
assistance in the development of an Army-wide program for the prevention and control
of hospital-associated infections. Specific services include consultative visits,
comprehensive surveys, special studies or investigations and training; maintenance of
information on developments, practices, and standards; review of existing and proposed
standards; and development of technical guides.

Directorate of Radiation and Environmental Sciences.
a. Entomological Sciences and Pesticide Division. Provides technical
consultant assistance and surveys in the field of entomology and pesticide monitoring to
the Army, and to any other organization designated by The Surgeon General. Performs
laboratory studies to determine precise levels of insecticide resistance of medically
important populations of insects at Army installations. Maintains stocks of
Entomological Society of America test-grade insecticides and World Health
Organization insecticide resistance kits for distribution to military entomologists in all
U.S. military services throughout the world. Provides laboratory services involving
