c. Mortuary Services. Mortuary services generally include: removal of remains
from place of death, services, and items required for preparation (excluding burial
clothing), casket, and shipping container.
(1) The remains of the deceased are moved from the place of death to a
mortuary. This is called "removal."
(2) Preparation consists of embalming and other preservative measures,
derma (skin) surgery, restorative art, dressing or wrapping, placing in casket, and other
related items.
(3) The mortuary officer is responsible for obtaining the casket and shipping
case. The Armed Services have a specification casket and shipping container. When
necessary, caskets are labeled with a tag marked as follows:
(a) "Nonviewable" when condition of remains are such that even after
best possible preparation, public viewing is deemed inadvisable.
(b) "Contagious Disease" when death resulted from a contagious or
communicable disease.
