PVNTMED are a vital part of the health services provided by the AMEDD to maintain
the health of the Army and conserve its fighting strength.
Section IV. THE MEDICAL SERVICE CORPS
The MS consists of a chief (brigadier general), four assistant chiefs, and other
commissioned officers representing more than 20 separate specialties. Each assistant
chief is chief of one of the four sections of the corps and is the consultant to TSG and to
the Chief of the MS on activities relating to his section. Officers of the MS may be
identified by their insignia that is a combination of the letters "M" and "S" superimposed
on a silver caduceus (figure 3-1). The four sections of the MS and the AOCs belonging
to each section are given below.
a. Pharmacy, Supply, and Administration. Officers of the pharmacy,
supply, and administration (PS&A) section specialize in pharmacy, supply, and all
phases of Army medical service administration. Roughly, two-thirds of the MS officers
are assigned to the PS&A section. Included are not only many technical and
administrative specialists, but also many of the top executives and field commanders of
the AMEDD. Officers of the PS&A section command medical non-treatment units such
as medical battalions and companies (in a training status); ambulance and helicopter
evacuation units; and medical supply, optical, and maintenance (MEDSOM) units. The

b, Medical Allied Sciences. Officers of this section specialize in sciences that
are allied to the practice of medicine. Medical laboratory sciences, podiatry, audio logy,
oral health, psychology, and social work are included. The medical allied sciences
section is the second largest section, constituting about one-fifth of the MS strength.
