h. Ambulatory Procedure Visits (APV). (Beginning with the deployment of
CHCS version 4.5).
(1) An APV refers to immediate (day of procedure) pre-procedure and
immediate post-procedure care in an ambulatory setting. An APV is identified by a "5, 7,
or 8" in the fourth position of the MEPRS code.
(2) Care is required in the facility for less than 24 hours. Facilities may set their
own lower limits. The nature of the procedure and the medical status of the patient using
the ambulatory care units combine for a requirement for short term care (but not inpatient
care), which is more appropriately rendered in a specialized area (such as an ambulatory
procedure unit or extended care area rather than in an outpatient clinic).
(3) All types of anesthesia may be used appropriately by privileged providers.
When possible, anesthetics should be chosen to expedite patient discharge.
(4) This category is appropriate for all types of patients (obstetrical, surgical,
and nonsurgical) who, by virtue of the procedure or anesthesia, require post procedure
care, observation, or recovery.
(5) Report the number of APVs in Item Code 00, column 22-26. The CHCS
automatically computes and reports APVs based upon entries and corrections made in the
CHCS for the reporting period.
i. Live Births. The number of infants born at the reporting MTF during the
reporting period appears in Item Code 01, columns 01-04. The CHCS automatically
computes and reports live births based upon entries and corrections made in the CHCS
for the reporting period.
j. Bassinet Days. A day in which a live birth at the reporting facility occupied a
bassinet in the newborn nursery at the census taking hour (normally midnight). The stay
must be continuous since birth. The stay is also not dependent on the status of the mother.
This excludes days spent by infants in a bassinet on a pediatric nursing unit, pediatric or
neonatal intensive care unit, or other nursing unit. Report all bassinet days in columns 05-
08 with an Item Code of 01. The CHCS automatically computes and reports bassinet days
based upon entries and corrections made in the CHCS for the reporting period.
k. Live Birth Sick Days. Report all sick days attributable to a live birth admission
in columns 09-12 with an Item Code of 01. The CHCS automatically computes and reports
live births based upon entries and corrections made in the CHCS for the reporting period.
