LESSON 4
ARMY PREVENTIVE MEDICINE AT FIXED FACILITIES
4-1.
INTRODUCTION
The scope of the preventive medicine service (program) at a fixed facility
includes many tasks performed in the field. However, at fixed installations, family and
community life is more developed and complex. Due to this, preventive medicine at a
fixed installation focuses on those health issues related to the community. Although all
fixed facilities have a common preventive medicine mission, they vary considerably in
type and size. Each facility must tailor its preventive medicine program to meet its
needs. This lesson will discuss preventive medicine at the two largest and most
representative of fixed facilities, the MEDDAC (medical activity) and the MEDCEN
(medical center).
4-2.
THE MISSION OF A PREVENTIVE MEDICINE SERVICE AT A FIXED
FACILITY
The basic mission of a preventive medicine service at a fixed facility is to reduce
military and civilian sick call and to increase efficiency. This is done by protecting the
health of personnel and their dependents. Comprehensive services in disease and
injury prevention, control, and rehabilitation are offered for the total military community.
