b. The engineer battalion is commanded by a lieutenant colonel, which is also
the division engineer. As division engineer he is a member of the division special staff.
c. The headquarters company operations have an impact upon the engineer
effort throughout the division in the areas of potable water supply, additional engineer
equipment, and ADM.
d. The combat engineer companies in the engineer battalion of the infantry,
mechanized, and armored divisions are organized similarly and are capable of
performing such tasks as: repairing and maintaining roads, bridges, fords, and culverts;
assisting in the emplacement and removal of obstacles, including mines and booby
traps; assisting other troops in the construction and emplacement of fortications,
camouflage, and deceptive devices; and assisting in the assault on fortified positions.
The company is also capable of performing engineer reconnaissance and providing
technical advice to supported organizations on engineer matters. The airmobile division
engineer battalion has the additional capability of constructing, repairing, and
maintaining landing sites for both USAF and US Army aircraft.
e. The bridge company of the engineer battalion in the infantry.mechanized and
armored divisions can provide:

Mobile assault bridge equipment.
(2) Armored vehicle launched bridging equipment capable of passing class
60 loads over wet or dry gaps up to 18 meters in width for four separate assault
