2-13. SIGNAL BATTALION
a. The signal battalion provides division-level communications support. The
battalion is organized functionally with four companies: the headquarters and
headquarters company, the command operations company, the forward
communications company, and the support operations company (Figure 2-7). As the
names of the companies imply, they perform their signal functions in particular areas of
the division zone.

b. The signal battalion is commanded by a lieutenant colonel, which is also the
division communications-electronics (C-E) officer. Like the division engineer, he is a
member of the division special staff.
c. The headquarters and headquarters company plans, directs and coordinates
the operations and training of the battalion and provides command, control, and
"administrative/logistic support for the battalion. It also provides the personnel for the
division C-E staff section and photographic services for the division.
d. The command operations company provides internal communication facilities
for the division command Echelons and signal center service for units located in the
vicinity of the division command Echelons. It normally establishes a signal center in the
