4-35. MAINTENANCE
a. Medical maintenance support is provided by the biomedical equipment
specialist assigned to each medical company. The supporting corps MEDSOM
battalion at its location or on site provides higher-level medical maintenance support by
teams of this unit.
b. Single-vision lens optical fabrication support is provided by the medical
support company. The supporting corps MEDSOM battalion provides multivision lens
fabrication support.
4-36. MASS CASUALTIES
The projected NBC and conventional enemy weapons systems cause mass
destruction. They have a large disabling capacity. They are also deadly. Medical units,
therefore, can expect mass casualty situations. Managing and handling these situations
severely tax the division or corps health service support systems. In such situations,
the division, when possible, shifts its treatment and evacuation resources to meet the
requirements. When required, additional evacuation resources and treatment elements
may be requested from the corps medical brigade/group. The key to managing mass
casualties is the use of on-site triage and emergency medical treatment teams. Other
important areas include effective communications and skillful employment of evacuation
vehicles (air and ground). The rapid buildup of evacuation assets at the mass casualty
location eases the problem. Also, the prompt movement of patients to all available
MTFs helps. This movement dissipates the medical workload by distributing casualties
equitably among the MTFs. This is done based on the patient's condition and on MTF
capabilities.
